| Abstract | The occurrence of hydraulic transients in pumping systems is a normal response to any changes in the steady state conditions of the system. However, some unplanned events, such as a rapid closing of valves or a pump trip, associated with a power outage, may generate hydraulic transients of a greater intensity. The propagation speed of pressure waves, caused by the disturbances, can damage the piping and put the entire system at risk. The present study aimed to simulate the worst case scenario of transient conditions in a real water main, in order to guarantee a safe water supply system. The simulations were performed using the software MIKE URBAN, supported by DHI Water&Environment. The physical parameters were estimated according to the literature. The transient boundary conditions were defined as the hydraulic gradeline of 207,1 m and a flow of 1.100 m 3 /h. In addition, the analysis was performed on three scenarios, each one with different end conditions of the conduit. The node of interest is located immediately downstream of the check valve. The highest hydraulic gradeline achieved was 347,8m, which corresponds to a positive pressure of 203,1m. The minimum pressure estimated was -10,3 m (absolute vacuum). Finally, the more rigid the system the worst the pressures achieved, what leads to the necessity of control devices and strategies. |
