| Abstract | Vegetation and climate over approximately the past 10,000 yr in southern Santa Cruz (Argentina) were reconstructed using fossil pollen from a sedimentary deposit at the archaeological site Cave Las Buitreras (51° 07'S; 70° 16'W ). Twenty nine surface samples reflecting modern pollen dispersa] from the Andes to the coast between 51° and 52° lat. S and twenty fossil samples were ordenated together by principal-componen! analysis to interpret the fossil record in terms of paleoenvironmental information. At the beginning of the Holocene a humid and cold steppe of grasses was dominant. This suggests more moisture availability, probably related to lower temperate oran increase in precipitation to about 250 mm. A substantial vegetational change occurred in the early Holocene. This change is documented by the replacement of the humid steppe by xeric steppe, suggesting a decrease in precipitation (200 mm) and an increase in summer temperature. This environmental change was contemporary with the extinction of Pleistocene fauna, the increasing abundance of Lama bones, as well as with the early exploration stage of the steppe by the paleoindians. The xeric steppe conditions extended until ca. 8000 yr B.P. when a situation with more water availability between 7600 and ca. 4500 yr B.P. is suggested by the record. There is no information from ca. 4500 to 800 yr B.P. due to a gap in the pollen record. During the last 800 yrs a xeric steppe developed. Likely a more xeric and open steppe related to semi-desert conditions persisted during the last 650 yrs. The comparison with previously analyzed palaeoenvironmental records revealed a consisten! pattern of changes in southern South America between 51 o - 52° S. |
