| Abstract | The use of saline waters or improper management in irrigated areas cause the accumulation of salts in the soil, which when in excess can affect various physiological processes of the crops. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of irrigation water salinity on leaf gas exchange of plants of noni (Morinda citrifolia L.) grown in two environments and in the absence or presence of organic matter. The experimental design was a randomized block design arranged in split plot scheme, with 5 repetitions. The plots consisted of the cultivation environments (greenhouse and open sky), the subplots salinity levels of irrigation water (ECw: 0.3, 1.5, 3.0, 4.5 and 6.0 dS m), and the subsubplots were represented by the absence and presence of organic matter. Measurements of stomatal conductance (gs) and net photosynthesis (A). Was observed that increasing levels of salts inhibited the gas exchange of plants noni. Plants cultivades in full sun showed higher values of stomatal conductance and photosynthesis, when compared to the plants under the protected environment. Plants in protected environment presented lower reduction in photosynthetic rate when grown at moderate and high levels of salinity of irrigation water. Organic matter did not reduce the deleterious effects of salinity on leaf gas exchange of noni plants. Based on the results, it is concluded that noni plants grown in protected environment were less influenced by salinity of irrigation water, being this environment more suitable for the production of noni seedlings under irrigation with brackish water. |
