| Abstract | Introduction: Cerebral Palsy is the most common cause of motor deficit in childhood. About 30 to 40% of children with neurological impairment have eating disorders. These eating disabilities can have repercussions such as malnutrition and can directly affect growth and development. Objective: To evaluate the relationship between motor function, feeding performance and anthropometric data of 5 year old children with Cerebral Palsy. Population and Methods: This study evaluated 140 children at 5 years of age and clinically diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. The motor function was evaluated through the Gross Motor Classification System; the feeding competencies by the Classification of Feeding Performance; the percentiles of weight, height and body mass index for age were determined through the specific growth charts for this population. Results: Regarding motor function, level V of the Gross Motor Function System was the most common (40,0%). In terms of feeding competencies, level I of the Classification of Feeding Performance system was the most representative (31,4%). The risk of being overweight was higher than the risk of being underweight for age. It was found that the higher the severity of motor function and eating problems, the lower the percentile of weight, height and body mass index for age, and that greater feeding difficulties are associated with the impairment of children's growth. Conclusion: It was confirmed to exist a relationship between the motor function and the feeding performance of the children and that major feeding difficulties affect their anthropometric data. |
