| Abstract | Several studies have shown that violence is not an isolated phenomenon, but a result of personal, family and social factors. Alcohol abuse, poor social interaction, family rejection and irresponsibility while caring for children have been associated with youth violence. The purpose of this study was to identify personal, school, family and health variables, as well as legal and illegal drug consumption, as possible discriminating variables between adolescents, with and without legal problems. A Socio-demographic Schedule for Adolescents was answered by 60 youngsters accused of criminal activities and 40 without such problems, of similar age and social context. Discriminant analysis revealed significant differences in all variables: school incidents and consumption of legal and illegal substances, parental harassment, relation with and between parents, whom they lived with their first five years, detentions and fights, beginning age of sexual activity, and general health status. Results suggest considering these variables as risk factors to be included in future prevention programs aimed to avoid violence among young adolescents. |
