| Abstract | An outbreak of trypanosomiasis by Trypanosoma vivax was reported in 2008 in a dairy cattle farm located in the municipality of Igarape, Minas Gerais. The clinical signs and pathology of the disease were studied from September 2007 to October 2008. T. vivax was identified by Woo test and allele-specific polymerase chain reaction test (AS-PCR). The affected animals presented fever, pale mucous, anemia, anorexia, palpable lymph nodes increased in size, high respiratory and heart rates, apathy, progressive weight loss, and abortion. One cow showed signs of a nervous system disorder. Necropsy findings revealed enlarged lymph nodes, liver, spleen and gallbladder, splenic lymphoid hyperplasia with prominence of white pulp, and multifocal random hepatic necrosis accompanied by a moderate inflammatory cell infiltrate. Myocarditis and pericarditis were the main histological findings. Treatment with diminazene aceturate was not efficient due to unsuccessful parasite clearance. Furthermore, clinical manifestations did not disappear after the beginning of the outbreak. Clinical, haematological and pathological changes in cattle naturally infected by T. vivax confirm the pathogenicity of the isolated strains in the region. |
