| Abstract | The chemical industries worldwide are facing the ch allenges of stringent environmental regulations amidst severe market comp etitiveness. There is a growing demand for chemical processes that are clean, energ y efficient, intrinsically safe and responsive to market needs. In order to meet these objectives, chemical industries are driving towards more environmentally friendly proce ss s that meet requirements such as generation of nearly zero waste chemicals, les energy consumption, use of less hazardous chemicals, reusable materials [1]. C atalysts are the major component in the chemical industry. Homogeneous catalysts suc h as HF, HCl, H2SO4, etc, are the main catalysts used in catalysis. These are ver y effective catalyst, but they produce highly corrosive materials. When they used to catalyze a chemical process, the purification is difficult as well as hazardous [2]. Hence, there has been a strong interest in the use of environmentally friendly het erogeneous solid acid catalysts as a replacement to homogeneous catalysts [1]. The heter ogeneous solid acid catalysts are easier to handle, reusable, purification is simpler and cheaper and the general operation of a large chemical process is safer. Man y heterogeneous catalysts such as clay minerals, pillared clay minerals, exchange res ins, zeolites, amorphous silica – alumina, etc have been used for chemical processes. Among these catalysts, natural and modified clays have attracted significant atten tion due to their extremely versatile properties [3]. Montmorillonite clay has been used as an efficient catalyst for many organic syntheses [4]. |
