| Abstract | Les concessionnaires forestiers quebecois ont ete longtemps consideres comme des « barons du bois ». Une telle interpretation est erronee, car ces concessionnaires ne constituent pas un groupe homogene, comme le montre la typologie developpee par l'auteur. De plus, l'etendue de leurs domaines forestiers variait beaucoup au fil des temps. En outre, on n'observe aucune concentration des permis de coupe durant la seconde moitie du XIXe siecle, en raison notamment des limites inherentes au mode familial de gestion et de propriete des entreprises. For a long time Quebec lumberers, as a group, have been regarded as "Lumber Barons". This paper demonstrates, however, that there were important differences among them. Using a typology of lumber operators, it is shown that they did not constitute a homogeneous group and that the size of their timber limits remained quite unstable. Furthermore, no process of concentration of timber limits occurred during the second half of the 19th century owing mainly to the family mode of management and ownership of the lumber firms. |
