Historia de la taxonomía de Coleoptera en México durante el siglo XX: una primera aproximación

| Abstract | We present herein a preliminary historical analysis of Mexican coleopterology during the 20th century, based on a database containing information on the taxonomical articles published in the country. Nine out ofthe 27 Mexicanjournals analyzed contain taxonomical papers dealing with Coleoptera. According to the dispersion of the published information, as measured by the Bradford model, these journals were arranged into three zones: (!) Folia Entomologica Mexicana, that published 36.3% of the taxonomical articles on Coleoptera: (2) Anales del Instituto de Biologia (20.8% of the articles) and Acta Zoologica Mexicana (15.2 %); and (3) Ciencia, Dugesiana, Anales de la Escuela Nacional de Ciencias Biologicas IPN, Revista de la Sociedad Mexicana de Historia Natural, Zoologia Informa, and Memorias de la Sociedad Cientifica Antonio Alzare, that together published 27% of the articles. 335 out of the 6,141 articles analyzed refer to taxonomy of Coleoptera, and 157 out of the 2,329 authors have published on this group. 63% of the authors are specialized in a single family. 74% of the institutions were they worked are Mexican, being the most important the Instituto de Ecologia, A.C. of Xalapa, the Instituto de Biologia of the UNAM, and the Escuela Nacional de Ciencias Biologicas of the IPN. The majority of the foreign authors are from Argentina and the U.S.A. 36 articles refer to evolutionary (29), cladistic (5), and phenetic (2) relationships. The best studied families are Scarabaeidae with 74 articles (21.5% ), Melolonthidae with 58 (16.8% ), and Curculionidae with 35(10.1%). |
