| Abstract | Animals have a very strong presence within post-independence African novels and they provide a rich collection of metaphors and images. Whether small like the spiders that appear in the title of Ibrahima Ly’s novel, Toiles d’Araignees, or enormous like the elephant or of the lion in Williams Sassine’s texts, they come to symbolize cruelty or monstrosity and are related to the arbitrary nature of autochthonous governance. Conversely, they can take on a figurative quality that can be read as the possibility for change. |
