| Abstract | In this paper, we illustrate the methodologies we have developed for studying the Old Hispanic Lenten psalmi and threni and for comparing the melodies of different Old Hispanic manuscripts. We begin by examining how the text of each chant connects to the broader themes of the Old Hispanic Lent. We consider how the text was understood within the Old Hispanic liturgy and in the tradition of biblical exegesis that would have been familiar to its compiles. We then analyze the role the melodies play in articulating those texts. We conclude that the Old Hispanic Lenten threni and psalmi texts were carefully chosen, and that the melodies convey these texts in meaningful ways. In the second part of the paper, we illustrate our methodology for comparing the versions of the chants in E-L 8 and E-Tc 35.5. In conclusion, we show that the E-Tc 35.5 preserves versions of the melodies that are related to those of E-L 8 and argue for its importance in the study of Old Hispanic chant. |
