| Abstract | From the analysis of news coverage of the World Conference on Social Determinants of Health (Rio de Janeiro, 2011), the paper investigates the production and circulation of meanings about social determinants of health in the mainstream media and seeks to contribute to the design of the "Map symbolic market on social determinants of health ", according to the proposal of Araujo (2006). The sample includes 288 inserts the event in Brazilian and foreign media, aired in the period from 05 October to 05 November 2011. The analysis shows that, although the relationship between health and social inequalities conditions have been addressed from the perspective of the determinants social health, which is non-recurring in the mainstream media, the news reproduced the communication model that prioritizes certain authoritative voices at the expense of discursive polyphony (Araujo and Cardoso, 2007). This trend is observed for the legitimacy conferred to five institutions - WHO, Ministry of Health, Fiocruz, Anvisa and IBGE. - Quoted in the titles of 68% of articles published by major news portals in the country's monopoly - or oligopoly - discursive these vehicles is enhanced by the total absence of participation of representatives of social movements - what happened exclusively in blogs. |
