| Abstract | The effect of the introduction of anaerobic digester (AD) pre-treatment on the performance of a Constructed Wetland Domestic sewage treatment plant (CWDSTP) was monitored. The CWDSTP was initially operated without pre-treatment with an AD. The AD was introduced after the observation of regular clogging of Cell 1 of the CWDSTP. The system was monitored for pH, Total Dissolved Solids, Turbidity, Conductivity, Dissolved Oxygen, Manganese, Iron, Nitrate, Sulphate, Phosphate, BOD and E. coli prior to the introduction of the AD and post introduction of the AD. The obtained results for the overall removal efficiency without AD pre-treatment were pH (-2.43%), TDS (48.25%), Turbidity (41.41%), Conductivity (54.63%), DO (-178.95%), Mn (52.40%), Fe (55.73%), NO3 (42.29%), SO4 (43.26%), PO4 (47.36%), BOD (46.62%) and E. coli (45.14%). Whereas, with the introduction of the AD, the removal efficiencies were pH (-1.0%), TDS (90.45%), Turbidity (99.99%), Conductivity (99.12%), DO (-495.61%), Mn (94.73%), Fe (90.73%), NO3 (97.93%), SO4 (67.49%), PO4 (98.99%), BOD (99.0%) and E. coli (99.18%). The paper concludes that for better performance and to avoid clogging, Constructed Wetlands for sewage treatment should be preceded by at least a pre-treatment process e.g. anaerobic digester. |
