| Abstract | The application of Lie group theory to difference equations is much more recent than its application to differential ones. For instance, Sophus Lie classified second order ordinary differential equations according to their symmetries in 1891. A similar classification of second-order difference schemes was only performed in the year 2000. Here we present some new resuits on the symmetry classification of third-order clifference schemes. We also present some numerical computations showing that symmetry preserving discretizations of differential equations have smaller errors than standard integration schemes. |
