| Abstract | In the 19th century, French is the language of culture, art and of technical and industrial modernity. It is also an international language thanks to the Paris World Exhibitions and to great writers such as Balzac, Flaubert and Zola. The recurring use of French words in Clarin’s well-known novels is therefore no coincidence: it shows the complexity of linguistic borrowing by a society that continuously goes back and forth between its identity claim and its need to join the contemporary cultural movement. |
