| Abstract | During the second half of nineteenth century, landscape painting of Valencia was developed primarily around a specific theme, through which artists were defined as real landscape painters. These central themes were convents, la albufera and the orchard. The historical evolution of Valencian territory had led to the settlement of monastic orders in beautiful and remote places, which, in the course of time, provided a ruinous appearance replete with properly (indigenous) Mediterranean vegetation. Therefore, those places became privileged sites in this first search of natural landscape. In turn, the fact of being places perfectly recognizable by the public, made them an ideal place for landscape painters to demonstrate their abilities in nature painting. Gradually, the anecdotism and figuration would open way to the landscape at its best expression, turning this one into the real protagonist of the painting. |
