| Abstract | Background: Research shows that sexual desire has decreased in women in different ages. Women with low sexual desire experience this as a problem. Sexual desire can be expressed and different for different women. It can be reduced and increased by positive and negative factors. Objective: To describe women's experiences of sexual desire. Method: A qualitative interview study with an inductive approach. Four women participated in the study. Results: Three categories and seven subcategories emerged from the analysis showing that the women had common but also different perceptions of their sexual desire. The categories are Sexual desire is central in a relationship, Factors that affect sexual desire and Unusual but important to talk about sexual desire. Conclusion: Women described that they fund it important talking about sexual desire but that this was rarely done. Sexual desire was associated in one way or another with sex and desire was perceived as an essential part of a relationship. The desire could be affected by emotions, ambient expectations, standards and media. Midwifes can have a significant role supporting women in talks about sexuality and sexual desire. |
