| Abstract | For a long time both job satisfaction and motivation have been a crucial issue of study because of its effect on workers and its impact upon organizations and the quality of services. From the point of view of labour and organizational psychology different theories have been developed with the aim of explaining the mechanisms and factors that make a job motivating and rewarding: since Taylor's first theory, a mechanicist conception, other more humanist theories have arisen which involve both the job characteristics and the individual's intrinsic characteristics and needs. Also a wide range of questionnaires based on these theories has been developed in order to measure job satisfaction and motivation. In the field of nursing, a profession subjected to stressful situations as it involves human contact and deals with health and illness, life and death, there are some specific measuring tools too. There are many studies concluding that the degree of job satisfaction is moderate and that interpersonal relationships, quality patient care, autonomy, recognition, etc. are important to achieve job satisfaction. In this context we have done research among nurses working in the surgical area of the University Hospital Marqués de Valdecilla using a survey containing sociodemographic, work and education variables and the Font Roja hospital job satisfaction questionnaire. 67,4% replied. The average general job satisfaction was 2,99 (SD 0,41) over 5. The highest satisfaction was related to co-worker relationships, work itself, and professional competence. The lowest satisfaction was related to praise and recognition, job promotion and work related strain. There are significant differences between the staff with fixed timetable and the staff working in different shifts, the permanent staff and the temporary staff and it's related to the number of years they've worked. In addition, similarities have been found with other studies among nurses and some differences too, such as a lower job satisfaction in general. |
