Abstract	The article discusses the desired competencies of employees of companies in the airline industry in Bielsko-Biała region. In the introduction the essence of competencies and different approaches in defining this concept are presented, both in terms of Polish and English literature. The further part of the work indicates the relationships and dependencies among competencies, skills and qualifications. It presents different competence models by which the competencies have been analysed in terms of their structure. The empirical part presents results of the research carried out at the end of 2014. The aim of the research was to gather information concerning needs for employees in Bielsko-Biała industrial region and to define the desired employee competencies which employers expect. The airline industry companies were the subject of the research. As a research tool a questionnaire survey was used. The results indicate the presence of a competitive gap in candidates for the job, which in particular relates to practical skills, professional experience, knowledge of foreign languages and specialised computer programmes. The results of the above analysis could be used to improve the process of staff training for airline industry companies belonging to Silesia Air Cluster.
