| Abstract | Introduction: insulin resistance is the inability of the hormone to exert its usual biological effects on the carbohydrates, lipids and proteins metabolism; consequently, it conditions the metabolic imbalance, so that its detection provides the possibility that having identified it in a timely manner and if the factors that originate it are identified, strategies can be implemented to prevent diabetes mellitus type 2 in the medium and long term. Objective: to detect risk factors to develop insulin resistance in prediabetic university youngsters. Method: a longitudinal descriptive study was carried out on 756 new students. Anthropometric data and laboratory results were analyzed and subjects were classified as healthy, with prediabetes and diabetes (or both) according to the International Diabetes Federation. Results: 3.56% of students have fasting glucose values suggestive of prediabetes, a significant number have problems of overweight and obesity and alterations in cholesterol and triglyceride values, in correlation with the family history data there is a considerable number of students with diabetes, obesity and hypercholesterolemia in direct family members, which increases complications risk of each condition in medium and long terms. Conclusions: a high prevalence of overweight and obesity was observed, which suggests a higher risk of incidence to develop insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus in adulthood. |
