EnglishFollowing the path traced by the researches devoted to the rivers of the Cantar de Mio Cid, this article attempts to go a step beyond by delving into the presence and functions of the sea in the poem. In contrast with the rivers, which appear as a physical frontier, the sea is not only a geographic but a mental place, as it has an important symbolic and psychological value which is necessary to understand in order to fully comprehend the meaning of the sea in every single reference to it in the Cantar. On the whole, this article will not only decypher the meaning of this crucial symbol but also offer a perspective of the medieval concept of the sea. |
