| Abstract | The growth of open access institutional repositories has been remarkable in South Africa. Increasing numbers of institutions in South Africa are starting to implement digital institutional repositories in order to collect, disseminate, manage, preserve, and index the research output created by their communities. For a university, this would include materials such as scholarly publications, before (pre-prints) and after (post-prints) undergoing peer review, and digital versions of theses and dissertations. The Repository might also include special materials such as digital assets generated by and donated to an institution, such as art and a wide range of other image collections. Once digital materials are accepted by an Institutional Repository, the Repository should be able to guarantee access and preservation of the digital data. |
