Abstract	espanolEste articulo analiza la capacidad del derecho a la verdad para contribuir al esclarecimiento de la verdad historica y a la construccion de la memoria colectiva tras periodos de violencia excepcional. Para hacerlo distingue dos dimensiones de este derecho. La primera es aquella que busca reconstruir el pasado mediante el proceso penal, identificando responsables y resarciendo el dano ocasionado a las victimas. La segunda se refiere a un conjunto de practicas y normas que buscan consolidar el respeto a la memoria colectiva por medio de la produccion y circulacion de discursos acerca del pasado en la esfera publica. El proposito es demostrar que mientras la primera dimension privatiza una practica (la construccion de la memoria colectiva) que es esencialmente politica, la segunda hace que dicha practica sea posible. EnglishThis paper examines the right to truth’s capacity to contribute to the discovery of historical truth and to the construction of collective memory after periods of exceptional violence. In order to do this, it distinguishes two dimensions of this right. The first one aims at reconstructing the past through criminal justice, identifying perpetrators and providing remedies to victims. The second consists on a number of practices and norms that aim to consolidate respect to collective memory through the production and circulation of discourses about the past in the public sphere. The purpose is to demonstrate that while the first dimension privatizes an essential political practice (the construction of collective memory) the second one make this practice possible.
