| Abstract | The lack of iodine in food is accepted to be the cause of endemic goiter. The article briefly describes the circulation of this chemical element in nature and two ways of measuring the amount of iodine in the human organism, namely, creatinine content and uptake of radioactive iodine by the thyroid gland. It also includes the results of surveys made in this Hemisphere to determine the degree of iodine consupmtion by the population and a general review of the present state of attempts to define the iodine requirements of human beings |
