| Abstract | We study the formation of the Mexico-Guatemala border in the area that I call Cuchumatanes-Soconusco area. It analyzes in particular the 19th century, from the annexation of Chiapas to Mexico in 1824 until the signing of the Treaty of limits of 1882 and its concretion in 1892. This territory is inhabited by speaking population mam since before colonial. Throughout the 19th century formed the border between Mexico and Guatemala, and although mames them they did not participate in the war of independence, the integration to the province of Chiapas to Mexico generated political changes and administrative, being this people between two Nations. Using first-hand sources from the General Archive of Central America (agca), this article analyzes the role of Mame them in the process of formation of the border and the dynamics of occupation of the territory to the cartographic, legal and political definition of the line. |
