| Abstract | Given all the factors that constitute the occupational risk, noise risk is the most common and exposes a large number of workers to progressive and irreversible hearing loss. This disease named Induced Hearing Loss by Occupational Noise has tinnitus as one of the symptoms. The use of acupuncture as a treatment for this symptom has showed good results. Objective: It was to study the effectiveness of acupuncture on quality of life of workers with tinnitus exposed to noise. Methods: We conducted a prospective randomized trial in 20 patients with tinnitus and noise exposure. First, patients completed a quality of life questionnaire (THI) to obtain an initial score. At the end of 10 sessions of acupuncture, patients completed the questionnaire again (THI) to obtain a final score. Results: Twelve patients were female (60%) and 8 males (40%). The age group ranged from 22 to 56 years (the average was 45.9 years). Concerning the degree of severity, 50% of patients had grade 2 - mild tinnitus and 50% had grade 3 - moderate tinnitus. It was found that there was significant difference (p<0.001) between the pre and post treatment. Conclusion: The results of the evaluations through the THI show significant improvement in aspects related to tinnitus. This study suggests that acupuncture is an option of low cost and effective responses in improving the quality of life of workers with tinnitus exposed to noise |
