Most patients will receive treatment of diabetes mellitus by polypharmacy and it can affect the occurrence of drug interactions. Drug interaction is a one of drug related problem which identified as an occurance or state of drug therapy which able to affect patients clinic outcomes. This study aimed to determine whether there is of potential drug interactions in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2, determine the frequency of potential drug interactions in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2, and to determine whether the age and number of drugs can affect to potential drug interactions in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2. The study has been done on General Hospital dr. Zainoel Abidin Banda Aceh on November 2014 December 2014. The study was a descriptive Cross Sectional survey. Data analysis has been done descriptively by using Chi-Square test on SPSS Advanced Statistics 16.0. The results showed that among 96 sheets of prescriptions found 123 prescriptions experienced the incidence of potential drug interactions with frequencies of potential interaction is 62.8%. The most interaction is the interaction of insulin and metformin were 46 cases (22.88%). Factors affecting the potential for drug interactions in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus is the amount of drug (P = 0.000), whereas age was not associated with the occurrence of potential drug interaction (P = 0.890). Based on the result of this study, it can be concluded that the incidence of potential drug interactions in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2 is high with the majority of pharmacokinetic interaction mechanism is 42.29% for the moderate severity is about 64.68%, where about total drugs affect potential drug interactions. |
