Abstract	In Argentina, at the end of the 19th century, liberal intelligentsia considered the state public school as the best means to educate the citizens. The subject put face to face "liberal” and "catholic" leaders. This conflict was one of the most mentioned in Argentine historiography. The aim of this article is to analyse the political and ideological dimensions of that contest and the limits of the confrontation of values between both educational models: the secular public school and the confessional education.
