| Abstract | This article discusses the Late Medieval Castilian and Aragonese queens as founders of monasteries and convents, and as providers of endowment and support for these institutions. A number of case studies delineate the evolution and outcomes of these undertakings. We will come to an understanding of the policies that channeled the religious initiatives of these queens, be they consorts, dowagers, regents or queen-lieutenants. We will see how differentiating the particular, private and personal arenas from the strictly political ones can become a challenge. The sources at hand, the matters discussed and the approaches taken will reveal the differences and similarities between the two separate political and cultural entities that are the Crowns of Castile and Aragon. |
