| Abstract | This report is based on a paper about statistical methods for determining differences in gene expression by Dudoit et al. (2000). Following the approaches employed in the original publication we analysed a subset of the cDNA microarray data used by Dudoit to provide an answer to the question whether the same results can be obtained from the limited data source than from the full set. Our results show that very similar systematic errors occur in the smaller as they do in the complete dataset and thus the same normalization methods can be applied. Moreover, we detect similar patterns of genes as being differentially expressed, although they are not the same as in the Dudoit paper and our results are afflicted with a considerable number of false positives, which is, however, largely due to our not using adjusted p-values in the analysis as they were not considered to be part of the assignment. Concluding, it seems likely that the limited data source is also limited in information content. |
