Abstract	Through the analysis of the development of the current thick, explicit and control-oriented language policy in Estonia, the article argues that this policy cannot meet the future challenges of globalization and modernization of Estonian society, where the Estonian language has to create the basis for common sphere of information for both Estonians and non-Estonians.
