EnglishA biogeography of the Iberian seaweed flora is proposed, based upon records published by different authorities up to Jury, 1987. The Iberian Peninsula compases two distinct provinces, namely the Atlantic Iberia and the Mediterranean Iberia, having six biogeographic sectors: Guipuzcoa, the Cantabrian Sea and the Galician shelf, Northern Portugal, Southern Portugal, Strait of Gibraltar and Mediterranean Sea. The border between both provinces could be in the coast of Granada. Statistical correlations have been also tried between several geographic/oceanographic parameters and species numbers or Rhodophyceae/Phaeophyceae quotients (R/P). Only a small number of statistically significant correlations emerge as a result of the paucity of oceanographical data. R/P quotient shows significant correlations with solar radiation, water temperature in summer and salinity. |
