| Abstract | In this chapter, the theory of the interlayer exchange coupling will be explained with emphasis on the Bruno coupling model. First, it is shown how magnetization loops can be calculated by considering the field, anisotropy and coupling energy contributions. Furthermore, it is indicated how the coupling strength can be determined from experimental hysteresis loops. Before presenting the Bruno coupling model, a phenomenological description is given and some properties of Green's functions are highlighted as these functions play an important role in the derivation. In relation to the experiments that were carried out, several aspects of the theory are treated in the following sections. The chapter concludes with a discussion of other models of interlayer exchange coupling and other effects with the same underlying mechanism and a review of the experimental results obtained so far. |
