| Abstract | This thesis deals with the negotiation of authority in organizational interactions. The objective is to investigate and analyze the (emerging) dynamic forms of authority, which, up to now, were somehow overlooked in organisational and social research. Throughout a given interaction and depending on the interlocutors' reactions, these forms of authority can arise, develop and fade; they fluctuate depending on the situations and they develop through the movements of framing and re-framing through which every interlocutor tries to establish « his/her authority » by influencing the other through his/her ideas, thoughts and arguments. As a result, a logic of positioning takes place and each player, whether consciously or unconsciously, adopts a strategy to win over the others or convey ideas and positions. This kind of positioning has sorne consequences for social and professional interactions. This document tackles both theoretical and empirical aspects of those consequences. Using ethnomethodological tools, a type of sociology developed by Harold Garfmkel an ex ample of a longitudinal analysis on a sequence of interactions is proposed. Then, a categorization of the dynamic forms of authority is established based on certain markers of authority that were selected from the research database created from the organisational interactions that took place between representatives of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and the health officials of Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo. |
