| Abstract | Introduction: Near-global mapping by the visible and near-infrared imaging spectrometer on Mars Express has discovered unique deposits of phyllosilicates minerals exposed in numerous scattered locations throughout the highlands [1]. Most of the phyllosilicate-rich deposits are in place, rocky units (outcrops, scarps and crater ejecta) of Noachian ages. Here, we first reassess the detection of these minerals at the light of the analysis of new data acquired since the publications of 2005. In particular, we emphasize the spectral diversity of each major class of phyllosilicates. We then provide the first quantitative analysis of the surface spectra using nonlinear spectral mixing [2] in order to determine the modal mineralogy within the limits of the current uncertainties in the modeling. |
