| Abstract | The effects of temperature, Pu concentration, HNO/sub 3/ concentration, and NO/sub 3-bar/ concentration on the oxidation of Pu/sup 4+/ to Pu/sup 6+/ have been studied. The rate of oxidation increases as temperature and Pu concentration increase, decreases as the HNO/sub 3/ concentration increases, and, in general, decreases as the NO/sub 3-bar/ concentration increases, particularly when the ion is supplied by a highly ionized nitrate salt, such as NaNO/sub 3/ or Al(NO/sub 3/)/sub 3/. UO/sub 2/(NO/sub 3/)/ sub 2/, which is strongly complexed in HNO/sub 3/ solution inhibits Pu/sup 6+/ formation when present in high concentration, but enhances its formation when present in low concentration. Quantitative data were obtained over a range of acid-salt concentrations, that should enable prediction of the oxidation state of Pu in most process solutions. (auth) |
