| Abstract | "In La Comarca Lagunera, 24,000 ha of forage corn and 15,000 ha. of grain corn grow each year, with 42 t ha-1 of forage yield and 3.3 t ha-1 of grain production. The objective of this work was to estimate the general combining ability (GCA) of the inbred lines, and the specific combining ability (ECA) of single crosses, the genetic parameters and correlations between traits and genetic parameters additionally to make single crosses of grain and forage, adapted to La Comarca Lagunera, environment. In the 2004 spring season, two groups of ten inbred lines were formed with lines of UAAAN-UL, INIFAP and CIMMYT; one group was used as male and the other as female and 100 possible direct single crosses were performed, another set of crosses was performed using six Inbred lines as tester including different origin (two from ix UAAAN-UL, one from INIFAP and three from CIMMYT), was used as male and 14 commercial corn hybrid from seed industry were used as female parents included in a 6 x 14 North Caroline designs II. Furthermore 45 single crosses between 10 inbred lines whose genetic parameters estimation were with method IV Griffing´s diallelic design. The crosses were evaluated in a complete randomized block design with two replications. Population density was 85,000 plants ha-1. The traits evaluated were: ear yield (RMZ), grain yield (RG), ear diameter (DMZ), cob diameter (DOL), ear length (LMZ), number of rows by ear (NHMZ), number of grains per row (NGPH) and weight of a thousand grains (PMG) and fresh mater production (PFV), dry mater (PMS), ear and husk (PET), ear (PE), husk (PTO), stalk (PTA), leaf sheath (PVA) and leaf (PHO). Male 1 and female 12 inbred lines present the highest value for GCA yield RMZ and RG. The 3x20, 7x14, 5x17, 1x16 and 2x11 single crosses had the highest values of SCA for the main yield components, yield of 1x16 cross was influenced by NGH and PMG from M12 and H16 respectively, while in cross 5x17 yield is based in LMZ and NGH from M5 and H17 respectively and is expressed by his SCA. At least, the 6x12 grain yield depends highly of NHMZ and PMG from M6 and H12 respectively. Some yield components have more influence than others due to the genetic diversity from the used lines. Dominance variance ( 2 D) showed largest estimates than additive variance ( 2 A) reflected by dominance degree (d) estimate, cross 3x20 showed the highest heterosis values for RMZ and RG in relation to the main parent (h) and the best parent (h’) values, male lines AN360PV and B40 and female commercial hybrids Venado, Potro, DK2002 and Cronos, were found to be outstanding for (GCA). x As for specific combining ability (SCA), new crosses (B40 x DK2000), (AN123R x Poseidon), (AN123R x Venado), (CML316 x Puma) and (CML316 x P3025) showed the highest SCA estimates. Once genetic parameters were estimated, dominance variance is more important than additive variance by a considerable margin, exception was the weight of one thousand grains, which behaved the other way around. These values were reflected on the low inheritance percentages, except for DOL." |
