| Abstract | The following dissertation aims to analyze both Pedro Passos Coelho's and Jose Socrates' electoral political discourses during 2011 legislative elections. In order to accomplish this we based our research on televised debates and press interviews through the analytical model of argumentation schemes. This is an innovative analytical model: its origins are rooted in Philosophy, and was never applied in Political Science. Our goal is to analyze arguments used by Passos Coelho and Socrates, and perceive the differences and similarities among the argumentative strategies used by both candidates. Furthermore, we compare both television and press in order to verify if the arguments are specifically tailored for each mass medium. The results suggest that Passos Coelho prefers the argument from practical reasoning more than Socrates, and that the argument from negative consequences and argumentation schemes from pragmatism have a relevant role in the argumentative strategies of both party leaders. Moreover, the empirical analysis allows us to conclude that argumentation schemes are more pervasive in press interviews than in televised debates. The emotional appeal is more visible in this last scenario. In our opinion, the results of this dissertation show that the analytical model of argumentation schemes emphasizes aspects that are normally not considered in political communication studies in Portugal. |
