| Abstract | Urban water management systems are based on powerful modeling tools, but these tools remain in the hands of sanitation specialists and are rarely used daily by operators and local authorities. Yet IT developments, whether at the level of computing capacity and Internet, pave the way to new, more user-friendly solutions, by promoting interactivity in the daily use of simulation tools. A hydrodynamic model, integrating water quality modelling, has been developed in Switzerland and is used to model and forecast in real time flows and water quality of urban sanitation systems. It is based on the Routing System (RS) tool and its RS URBAN extension, coupled with weather data from MeteoSwiss (current data and forecasting models COSMO2, COSMO7, based on the European model ECMWF). The set of calculations is performed on a centralized server and the end user consults the results via a Web interface. In addition to the simulation results, the interface receives information from sensors in place in real time (GSM / GPRS or Ethernet connections). The system was implemented and currently runs on five locations in Switzerland for more than three years (settlements between 35,000 and 700,000 population equivalent). In addition to the description of the system itself, the return of experiences gained and users assessments are discussed in this article. |
