| Abstract | Super and Extra gasolines distributed at the Metropolitan District of Quito were analyzed by Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry. 36 gas stations corresponding to the 30% of all existing until late 2014 (72 stations), were sampled. At first a qualitative analysis was performed to determine all hydrocarbons and other compounds present in gasoline; subsequently, BTEX (Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, Xylenes) concentration was determined, in order to clarify compliance of the Ecuadorian current regulations for gasolines. It was determined that Extra gasoline contain a higher amount of isoparafins and cyclic hydrocarbons, while the lack of those in Super gasoline reflects only a greater addition of aromatics. In some Extra gasolines, it was found hydrocarbons with alcohol groups, this could explain the Ecuadorian Government project to introduce “Ecopais” gasoline, with ethanol, in all the country regions. It was determined that benzene, a carcinogenic compound, exceeds the permissible limits in both types of gasoline, and is even practically the double in Super gasoline (1.105%). It also was observed that there is not current regulations for the addition of the rest of aromatics. Finally it was clarified that the modifications at the Esmeraldas Refinery, are related to the change of the reactor and regenerator of the FCC (Fluid Catalytic Cracking) unit. It is not the aim increase the production of petroleum derivates. |
