Abstract	In Japan, Hokkaido covers a wide area as a single administrative unit, and most of the inhabitants there are descendants of immigrants from various districts of Japan. In view of such geographical and historical peculiarities, we aimed at elucidating regional difference in the mortality rate of rnales and famales in Hokkaido due to stomach cancers in the present study. We investigated the stability of standardized mortality ratio(SMR)in small administrative units such as“shi(city),”‘「ku(ward),”“cho or machi(town),”and“son or mura(village),” estimated mortality rate due to stomach canc6rs in each of these small administrative units and classified them into a high-and low-mortality rate districts in terms of stomach cancers, We developed a few computer mapping procedures for this study, The following results were obtained, 1.Among 218 districts(i. e,,“ku,”“shi,”“cho or machi”and“son or mura”)in Hokkaido, SMR was high(>140)in Shimamaki mura, Furubira cho, Shakotan cho, Mashike cho, etc., locating along the coast of the Japan Sea andユow(<60)in Rausu cho, Esashi cho, Nayoro shi, etc.,10cating along the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk, 2.Mac°Coscopically, SMR due to stomach cancers was high in both males and females in the region along the coast of the Japan, Sea and inland region of the Doto area (east of Hokkaido), This distribution of the former was similar to that in the 北海道大学医療技術短期大学部看護学科掌北海道大学医学部衛生学講座(現在北海道大学医学部公衆衛生学講座) 瞬北海道大学医学部衛生学講座 Department of Nursing, College of Medical Techonology, Hokkaido University Depart血ent of Hygiene, School of Medicine, Hokkaido University 亭 cepartment of Hygiene, School of Medicine, Hokkaido University
