Abstract	This study investigated how it was characterized the construction of scientific knowledge of the institutional theory in organization studies in Brazil, from 1993 to 2007. It focuses in transformations in its substantive content as well as the social organization of scientists. It assumes that the construction of scientific knowledge is a social process comprehended by a recursive dynamics between the social and intellectual dimensions. In this process, different social mechanisms are involved such as relational, cognitive, and political/intellectual. Moreover, competition and cooperation are treated as duality. Structurationist-based institutional theory was adopted as analytical ground for conducting the research. The study has a descriptive-explanatory design with a longitudinal perspective. It relies on social network (co-authorship data) and scientometric (citation and co-citation data) analysis as research methods. Two analytic dimensions were considered: the cooperation relationships among scientists and the intellectual structure associated to the institutional theory. The findings point out a fragmented network surrounding two major clusters of scientific collaboration which concentrate the most part of the scientific production and researchers in the field of the institutional theory in organization studies in Brazil. These clusters denote research groups distinctively organized, mainly in concern of their degree of centralization, which has implications in the process of knowledge construction. Furthermore, they show different cognitive structures, which could be seen as underlying intellectual preferences. Considered altogether, these aspects implied that social ties among scientists in the field of institutional theory are also representative of intellectual affinity, which means that there are social mechanisms participating in the process of diffusion of ideas and formation of shared understandings, both aspects regarded to social embeddedness of researchers in the clusters they belong. The findings also reveal that the institutional theory cognitive structure has became more diversified and associated to different social clusters. Consequently, intellectual divergences appear to gain salience in the field, nevertheless, such aspect results from greater intellectual consolidation reached along the period under study, with certain autonomy and creativity presented by local researchers. This aspect was also verified by the notable presence of national scientists, in spite of their limited number, among the most cited in the field. These results make feasible to conclude that the increasing of cooperation in the field was associated both to the role performed by scientists named as continuants, and to stratification mechanisms in scientific production (and its consequences under the diffusion of scientific knowledge). On the other hand, the results illustrate the dynamics between competition and cooperation in the field along the construction of scientific knowledge. More broadly, the study concludes that the investigated processes represent the consolidation of the institutional theory concerning its programmatic content which, in terms of its intellectual structure, has become less homogeneous and more articulated. At last, the connection to the international context was characterized more as a consumption relation as intellectual subordination. All those aspects contributed to the current configuration of institutional theory in organization studies in Brazil, after all, resulted from a structuration dynamics involving social and intellectual dimensions, as well as its reciprocal influence.
