| Abstract | The historical conditions for the genesis of the shifting cultivation performed by Amerindians are reviewed. Before the European settlements in Guyanas, the historical events had no important effects upon the relationships between man activities and environment. Agriculture by slash and burn methods represented 40 to 50 per cent of the nutritional resources, but animal proteins capture (hunting and fishing) was socially valorized. With the Europeans arrival, agriculture became not only the basis for substance of permanent settlements, but overall the sources for commercial products. After a period of fighting for land owning, especially near the coast, the soils have been cultivated with indian methods, but only around the permanent centers for administrative and military purposes. The conditions of the man actions upon the environment suffer then a drastic change. The creole type of agriculture is still dependent of economical orientation and space occupation which are external to it. This arises the question of the future patterns for a self-centred economy, giving up the ideology of a continuous progress and growing. |
