| Abstract | Conclusions: GHB is more effective than placebo both in the treatment of withdrawal syndrome and in maintaining abstinence at mid-term. It is not better than diazepam and clomethiazole on withdrawal syndrome, while is more effective than NTX and disulfiram in preventing craving at mid-term. Results: Twelve RCTs studies were included. Ten studies were conducted in Italy, one in Germany, and one in Austria. Six studies evaluated the effectiveness of GHB in reducing the withdrawal syndrome, and six in maintaining abstinence at mid-term. According to the quality assessment, four studies were judged as of high quality, six of moderate quality, and two of low quality. Twenty-two studies were excluded. The main reasons for exclusion were lack of control group, failure in randomization, selection of patients, and lack of control of confounding factors in observational studies. |
