| Abstract | The purpose of t h i s study i s to investigate the nature and extent of Dylan Thomas's a r t i s t i c debt to William Blake. "Chapter I" of our study documents Thomas's professional i n terest i n Blake, o f f e r i n g evidence that Thomas read Blake extensively and c a r e f u l l y . Further, evidence i s presented of Thomas's admiration of Blake as a poet and h i s stated des i r e to emulate him. "Chapter I I " traces Thomas*s d i r e c t borrowings from Blake i n h i s 18 Poems as well as i n a short story. Because Northrop Frye's idea of the importance of and significance of l i t e r a r y borrowing and l i t e r a r y a l l u s i o n dictates the d i r e c t i o n of much of our argument, our discussion attempts to show t h e s i g n i f i cance of Thomas's borrowings; the implication i s that Thomas's imagination shared c e r t a i n archetypal s i m i l a r i t i e s to that of Blake's. The method of investigation used throughout.the thesis, then, has involved a detailed examination of the poems of both poets with the purpose i n mind of indicating, where possible, the archetypal significance of the borrowing. "Chapter I I I " attempts to. establish Thomas's d i r e c t debt to Blake for many of h i s images and concepts i n h i s "Altarwise by Owl-Light" sonnet sequence. Our implication i s that Thomas was d i r e c t l y influenced i n writing the sequence by h i s knowledge |
