Abstract	Global economic development is accompanied by increased pollution of natural environment. Numerous reports and publications, both European and national ones, inform us about a considerable level of natural environment degradation. This is the reason why present great significance is attached to changes in national policies of European states aiming at support and promotion of activities favouring environmental protection. The metal industry is one of these sectors of economy which have a great impact on environment due to the fact that it produces large amounts of waste. The European project (LdV) Development of the GreenPoint Qualification Standard and its implementation in small enterprises of the metal sector corresponds to the implementation plan of European (and the metal sector) priorities in economic development until 2020. The main goal of the project is supporting small and medium-sized enterprises of the metal sector in the field of environmental protection through development of vocational qualifications and promoting “green” culture. The paper presents results of the research into the state-of-the-art knowledge and training needs in the field of environmental protection of workers and managerial staff of the European metal sector companies as well as major conclusions which are the foundation for carrying out further stages of Project Works, i.e. development of the vocational competence profile for the GreenPoint promoter of environmental protection in a company and e-learning training programme.
