| Abstract | Digital transmission in wireless local area networks (WLANs) according to the IEEE 802.11b standard suffers from fading, intersymbol interference (ISI), and co–channel interference (CCI). In this paper, a receiver with interference cancellation, space–time block decoding, receive diversity combining, equalization, and decoding of the complementary code keying (CCK) modulated signals used in IEEE 802.11b is proposed. Time–reversal space–time block coding for two antennas is applied at the transmitter, which encodes two independent CCK signals. In the receiver, both CCK signals are jointly reconstructed using a multiple–input multiple– output (MIMO) decision–feedback equalization (DFE) scheme especially tailored for CCK modulation with space–time coding. Co–channel interference is mitigated by the feedforward section of the MIMO–DFE. The degrees of freedom of the receiver are used for a tradeoff between interference cancellation and realization of a diversity gain, depending on the given scenario. It is also shown that a better performance can be achieved with joint detection of the CCK code words than for a receiver with separate detection. |
