| Abstract | VILLARONGA, P. and GARCÍA-MARI, F., 1988: Los ácaros tetraníquidos y sus enemigos naturales del cultivo del avellano en Cataluña. Bol. San. Veg. Plagas, 14 (1): 39-44. Tetranychid mites had not been a serious problem in Catalonia hazelnuts since four years ago, when, as an apparent consecuence of indiscriminate use of wide-spectrum insecticides, a general increase in their population and damages, causing even complete defoliation of trees, has been reported. Four species of tetranychids can feed on hazelnut leaves in the area: Tetranycopsis horridus (Can. and Fan.), Eotetranychus carpini carpini (Oud.), Tetranychus urticae koch and Panonychus ulmi (Koch). Phytoseiid mites are particularly abundant and include a lot of species, Typhlodromus phialatus (A.H.) being the most commonly found, followed by Typhloctonus tiliarum (Oud.). Amblyseius californicus McG. or A. andersoni Chant can become abundant when tetranychid preys proliferate. Phytoseiids are found in all Kind of habitats on the plant, and also in the orchard weeds, and the crop seems to be highly suitable for their development due to the shape and structure of the trees and also to the food or prey available. Predator populations are able to recover readily after being destroyed by pesticides, provided that they had undisturbed shelter areas nearby. |
