| Abstract | The purpose of this literature review was to describe what the staff could do to facilitate breast-feeding for the premature baby at the neonatal department. The method used was a literature study with descriptive design. The result contained 30 scientific articles. The main results of the study showed that the mother’s connection to her child was of great importance for her ability to maintain breast milk production, until the child was mature enough to breast-feed. The staff facilitated the mother’s connection to her child, by providing information about the important role of the mother. The enforced separation between mother and child affected maternity binding. Parental participation in the care of the child was important for their binding to the child, maintenance of breast milk quantities and finally for the mother's ability to breast-feed her child. When staff worked according to mutual objectives and policies as well as encouraged and informed about the benefits of breast-feeding, the mother could be motivated to breast-feed her child. It was important that an appropriate complementary feeding method was used, not to affect the initial steps of breast-feeding negatively. It was important that breast-feeding was not just to provide food for the child, but also to strengthen the relationship with the child. |
