| Abstract | The objective was to evaluate the average daily gain (ADG), carcass characteristics, meat softness and profitability of feedlot cattle fed with different oilseeds and vitamin E. Forty young bulls of the Red Norte breed were used, with average initial body weight 339 ± 15 kg. The experimental design was completely at random in factorial arrangement 2x2. The experiment lasted 84 days and the diets showed grain soybean or cotton seed as a source of lipids associated or not with daily supplementation of 2.500 IU of vitamin E per animal. The concentrate: forage ratio was 60:40. Diets were isonitrogenous (13% CP) and with the same amount of ether extract (6.5%). Data were analyzed using SAS 9.1 statistical software. Vitamin supplementation and lipid source did not affect the ADG. There was no interaction between lipid source and vitamin supplementation for the variables studied. The inclusion of cotton seed reduced carcass yield. There was no effect of diets on the weights of hot and cold carcass, as well as the primary cuts. The inclusion of cotton seed reduced the subcutaneous fat thickness. There was no observed effect of experimental diets on the loin eye area. There was no effect of lipid sources and vitamin supplementation on meat softness, which was affected, however, by the time of maturity. Diets with soybean had a higher cost daily per animal. The use of soybean resulted reduction in gross margin (R$59.17 and R$60.51 for the soybased diets with and without supplemental vitamin, respectively vs. R$176.42 and R$131.79 for the diets based on cotton seeds). It is concluded that the use of cotton seed allows to improve the profitability of fattening confined, although negatively affect some carcass traits. |
